When you think of bath accessories, images of fluffy towels and decorative soap holders may come to mind first. That’s understandable. Even functional items like towels and soap can add to your bathroom’s aesthetic. However, the most important accessories in your bathroom are items like towel bars and robe hooks.

These types of items increase the functionality of your bathroom, but they are often overlooked in the overall design. Choosing bathroom hardware at the same time as you select faucets and other fixtures will keep your overall decor more cohesive and polished looking.

Seconds & Surplus carries a large number of bath accessories to help keep the busiest room in your house more organized. We provide commercial builders and homeowners with a variety of building materials, including everything you need for a new or remodeled bathroom. If you’re looking for bathroom hardware in the greater Dallas area, make Seconds & Surplus your first stop.

Who Needs Bathroom Hardware? (Hint: Everyone)

Whether you’re doing a simple remodel or building a new bathroom from the subfloor up, you’re looking at an expensive project. As such, you may be tempted to cut corners by skipping some of the basic accessories or picking them up at a discount store here and there. However, that would be a mistake.

Unless you’re living in a frat house (and even if you are), toilet paper holders and towel bars are absolute necessities. In the long run, you’ll save time — and maybe even money — by purchasing hardware when you buy other necessities. That way, you can make sure the style and finish of your bathroom accessories match other elements, such as faucets and lighting fixtures.

Types of Bath Accessories

Towel Rings and Towel Bars

No matter which shape you choose, all towel holders have the same job: hanging a towel so you can easily reach it. Towel bars are available in different widths, but 24 inches is the standard. A 24-inch bar like the Reflection Polished Chrome towel bar can easily hold two large bath towels, two hand towels, and two washcloths if desired.

Towel rings can typically accommodate only one bath or hand towel. Open rings like the Raze Towel Ring have a more modern look and may be easier for children and others with mobility issues to use than a full ring.

Whichever style you prefer, plan your item’s placement so that towels are within reach of the sink, shower, or bathtub. If you have more than one sink in your bathroom, it’s better to install two towel holders so there’s always a towel nearby. If you can’t decide on a style, consider how much space is available. Towel rings are ideal for small bathroom and vanity areas with limited open wall space.

Toilet Paper Holders

Even if you’re the only one in your household who takes the ten seconds needed to change the roll, toilet paper holders are a bathroom must-have. Open-ring style holders make refills so easy that even kids can use them.

According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, toilet paper holders should be installed 26” from the floor on the wall next to the toilet. Before selecting the holder, make sure it will fit in that recommended space.

Robe Hooks

Robe hooks are convenient and increase bathroom storage options. Though they are called “robe” hooks, an extra hook or two in the bathroom can come in handy for many things. Robes, pajamas, kids’ clothes or tub-toy baskets, and extra towels will stay clean and off the floor when you hang them from a robe hook.

Make sure robe hooks are placed high enough to keep items from dangling on the floor but low enough to be reached with ease.

Drain Plugs

Never underestimate the importance of a good drain plug. Push-style pop-up plugs are easy for everyone to use and are made to be durable. Pop-up drains are available for both overflow and no-overflow style sinks. Make sure you know which type of sink you have before ordering a pop-up sink plug.
