Types of Kitchen Cabinets

Whether you’re doing a kitchen remodel or building your dream kitchen for the first time, selecting the right cabinets is essential. Before you go about selecting colors and styles, you’ll need to decide which cabinet types you need.

Base Cabinets

Base cabinets aren’t just for storage — they also support your countertops. Most kitchen islands are also made entirely of base cabinets with a countertop. Base cabinets come in a range of sizes, from about 12” to 36” wide.

Sink base cabinets generally conceal your sink’s plumbing. But most other types of base cabinets have a range of convenient storage options:

  • Silverware drawers
  • Pull-out spice racks
  • Roll-out trays
  • Pull-out shelves for pots and pans
  • Built-in wine racks
  • Turnstiles (often in a corner base cabinet)
  • Trash can roll-outs

Of course, location matters when installing base cabinetry. For instance, it might be easier to have a trash-can rollout under the sink and a silverware/cutlery drawer on the kitchen island.

Wall Cabinets

Some people also call these “upper cabinets” — they’re the cabinets mounted on the wall above your kitchen counters. Many people use them to store plates and glassware. Unlike base cabinets, they typically don’t have pull-out features. The cabinets can be as much as 42” high, and most include shelves of varying heights.

If you have a good bit of wall space in your kitchen, you can stack wall cabinets above base cabinets to create an accent wall. When you choose an interesting color, it can really transform a room!

Utility Cabinets (or Pantry Cabinets)

Utility or pantry cabinets are the tall cabinets in many modern kitchens. Some even extend from floor to ceiling! They’re ideal for storing dry goods, but you can also use them to store cleaning supplies, spare dish towels, etc.

Like base cabinets, utility cabinets can include drawers, pull-out shelves, and more. And thanks to their height and space efficiency, they’re ideal for smaller kitchens. Our collection includes 84” and 96” unfinished and prefinished kitchen cabinets.

Accessories You May Need

When you’re installing your assembled cabinets, you’ll likely find that you need hardware and other accessories to complete your DIY remodel. Here are some to consider:

Toe Kick Panels

The “toe kick” of a base cabinet is the little recessed space at the bottom. This space allows your feet enough room so you can stand close to the sink or countertop. A toe kick panel is a piece of wood installed under your cabinet at the back of the toe kick.

Wall Fillers

If you have unsightly gaps between your walls and cabinets, fixing the issue is simple — you just need a wall filler or two. Wall fillers are simply small pieces of wood with the same finish as your cabinets.

End Panels

If the sides of your cabinets are already finished, you don’t need end panels. If they aren’t, finished end panels will complete your kitchen’s new look.

Moulding

The moulding around your cabinetry is essentially decorative wooden trim. One common example is crown moulding — a trim atop your wall cabinets that helps them blend gracefully into your ceiling. Moulding isn’t always necessary, but it’s a great way to make a statement!

Unfinished vs. Prefinished Kitchen Cabinets

If you want to customize your kitchen down to the color of the cabinets, unfinished cabinets are the best way to go. With these cabinets, you choose your own stain (or paint color), seal them, and install.

Unfinished cabinets involve a little more work, but they’re worth it if you want to truly make your kitchen your own. After all, prefinished cabinets generally come in basic neutral shades.

That’s not to say pre-finished cabinets are a bad idea, of course. Plenty of kitchens include neutral-hued cabinets. Pre-finished options also can’t be beaten when it comes to convenience. You don’t have to spend time painting, staining, and sealing — these cabinets are ready to install as soon as they arrive on your doorstep!

Our prefinished cabinets come in three main shades that work with any style of decor:

  • Georgetown White: A cool, modern white
  • Madison Ash: A natural, warm finish that showcases the woodgrain
  • Avalon White: A slightly warmer white

Just like our unfinished cabinets, our prefinished cabinets come in a range of shapes and sizes. Check out our collection today!
